This monograph is devoted to the characteristics of the various forms of equine rhinopneumonitis, its pathogenesis and immunogenesis, diagnostic methods, and approaches used to combat equine herpesvirus types 1 (EHV-1) and 4 (EHV-4) infection. Although both viruses can cause febrile rhinopneumonitis, EHV-1 is the main cause of abortion, paresis, and mortality in newborn foals. The central lesion of these three conditions is necrotizing vasculitis and thrombosis resulting from lytic infection of the endothelial cells lining the blood capillaries. Diagnosis is based on virus detection by cell culture isolation, detection of viral antigen by immunofluorescence, detection of the viral genome by polymerase chain reaction and restriction analysis, and detection of specific antibodies by retrospective serologic testing. Various types of vaccines are considered: live, inactivated and genetically engineered, their use and methods of monitoring immunogenicity in laboratory animals. The monograph may be useful for doctors, researchers, students and postgraduates of veterinary specialties interested in the problems of epizootiology, diagnostics and prevention of equine herpesvirus rhinopneumonitis.
