Ethnography of English Medium Instruction policy and practice in the multilingual context of a private university in Kazakhstan

This study aid serves as a comprehensive pedagogical resource designed to support English Medium Instruction (EMI) teachers in navigating the complexities of multilingual classrooms, particularly within the evolving educational landscape of Kazakhstan. Informed by recent ethnographic research on EMI policy and practice in a multilingual private university in Astana, the study aid responds to the real-world challenges faced by educators, including students’ limited English proficiency, insufficient teacher training, and institutional resource constraints. It is intended not only for current and future EMI teachers, but also for students in education-related fields, such as applied linguistics, TESOL, language education, and international education. The study aid can be effectively used in courses focusing on language policy, multilingual education, pedagogy in higher education, and curriculum development.
