The bulk of the material of this book first appeared in 1998. It was devoted to a historical event – to the jubilee of Irkutsk State Linguistic University. The present edition is very different from the previous one – as it ought to be after fifteen years! The improved book perhaps calls for an explanation. The reason is that the changes were needed because general linguistics in the last few decades has been developing very quickly and new research ideas have expanded enormously.
